Senator Rob Portman (R-Ohio) has now declared that he supports gay marriage. He told several Ohio newspapers that his own son Will, 21-years old is gay.
On one of the interviews with a local newspaper, he stated:
“It allowed me to think of this issue from a new perspective, and that’s of a dad who loves his son a lot and wants him to have the same opportunities that his brother and sister would have, to have a relationship like Jane and I have had for over 26 years.”
And on another interview, he said:
“I have come to believe that if two people are prepared to make a lifetime commitment to love and care for each other in good times and in bad, the government shouldn’t deny them the opportunity to get married.”
This is interesting news because he backed the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act which states that a marriage is a union between a man and a woman. The Supreme Court is set to hear a challenge to the case later in March 2013.
We need to accept this fact. It is not a trend. Gay marriage will become legal everywhere else. It is largely part of human rights as we know it. Gay rights is a human right.
