We all love swimmers. I specifically love Aussie swimmers. Ian Thorpe, the gold-medalist from Australia. He has long been rumored to be gay and was even spotted in Brazil with a mate, with whom he took a month-long vacation, Daniel Mendes.
Tabloids went into a frenzy with their own speculation and the rumor hasn’t died down.
On a recent interview with ABC1, he said that he finds the question about his sexuality annoying. He did confirm that his sexual preference is “women”.
Thorpe told ABC1 his business ventures — including his own sports drinks and underwear — were failing badly before he decided to launch a comeback this year.
“I was down,” he said.
“I call it the dark times.”
And he said he was at a loss at what to do next after his failed bid for Olympic selection.
“It’s tough to comprehend. I worked so hard to do this, I haven’t really thought about what to do now,” he said.
When asked about his sexual preference he says: “Women”.
However he says that he realised as young as 15 years old that gay men found him attractive.
“Being asked about (being gay) gets annoying,” he says.
“I think people feel threatened by me because they can’t define exactly what I am.”
We all should not be relying on wishful thinking all the time. Not all men are gay and in as much as I want Ian Thorpe to be on our team, I am fine as well if he plays for the other team.
