“Gay and Lesbian Americans should be treated fairly and equal.” – Pres. Barack Obama

This was the statement I have been waiting for when I created a post asking Pres. Barack Obama where he really stands on Same-sex marriage.

In an interview with ABC News, President Barack Obama finally stated his support for gay marriage. It was a strong signal that America needs this change. Gay rights are human rights. And if we are going to follow the United States Declaration of Independence written by Thomas Jefferson in 1776, it clearly states:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.

I applaud our President for clearly stating his support for marriage equality. Here’s an excerpt from the interview:

“I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married.”
