DASH Diet as the Best Diet for 2011 – but is it the easiest to follow?

No – it’s not a Kim Kardashian Diet – silly!

DASH which stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, has just been named the best diet of 2011 by U.S. News & World Report.

Deborah Enos, a certified nutritionist in Seattle said:

“While it may have started as a [blood pressure] lowering diet, it really has incredible nutritional value.”

The DASH diet, which aims to lower high blood pressure, topped the “best diet overall” list for the second consecutive year this year. The DASH diet also ranked at the top for best diet for healthy eating and the best diabetes diet. (DASH tied with the Biggest Loser diet for best diabetes diet.)

US News writes:

“DASH was developed to fight high blood pressure, not as an all-purpose diet. But it certainly looked like an all-star to our panel of experts, who gave it high marks for its nutritional completeness, safety, ability to prevent or control diabetes, and role in supporting heart health. Though obscure, it beat out a field full of better-known diets.

Fox News reports that the Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes, or TLC diet, took second place for best overall diet. The Mayo Clinic diet took third place.

The LA Times reports that the Weight Watchers diet also received high marks this year. The Weight Watchers diet was voted best weight-loss diet, best commercial diet plan, and easiest diet to follow.

The best diets of 2011 were chosen by a 22-person volunteer panel that included Doctors, nutritionists, and researchers.
